Choosing the right blogging platform is a crucial decision for anyone who wants to start a blog. It’s important to consider factors such as customization options, the ability to add your own logo, use a custom domain name, allow readers to subscribe to your updates, add Google AdSense codes to make money, and offer social media sharing and subscription options. While there are many free blogging sites available, they may not provide all the necessary features to attract traffic and generate income. Picking the wrong blogging platform can lead to regret later on, so it’s essential to make an informed decision. In this guide, we will help you choose the right blogging platform for your needs.
How to select the best blogging platform?
Understanding the essential features of a blogging platform is crucial at this stage. In addition to being easy to set up and not requiring any coding skills, it should also have a quick learning curve. Here are some factors to consider:
- Design: The blogging platform should have a range of design options that are suitable for your niche, and the ability to customize them should be straightforward.
- Feature extension: While every blogging platform comes with built-in features, there should be an option to easily integrate third-party tools and scripts into your blog.
- Easy learning curve: The platform should be easy to learn for everyone, regardless of their age.
- Support: If you have a simple question about your platform, where can you go for help? Some platforms have a thriving community that is always willing to assist newcomers.
- Mobile blogging: The platform should allow you to blog from your mobile device, as many people enjoy writing or blogging while on the go. This may not be a crucial requirement for a business blog, but it is still an important factor. You can also perform various tasks, such as moderating blog comments, responding to comments, and uploading images, from the comfort of your mobile phone, even if you do not plan to blog from it.
- Customization options: Choose a platform that allows you to customize the look and feel of your blog to match your brand or personality.
- Domain name: Some platforms offer a custom domain name, while others do not. If having your own domain name is important to you, choose a platform that offers this option.
- Monetization options: If you plan to monetize your blog, look for a platform that allows you to easily add advertising or affiliate links.
- Social media integration: Choose a platform that allows you to easily share your blog posts on social media and has social media subscription options.
- SEO: Look for a platform that is SEO-friendly and allows you to optimize your content for search engines.
How can a blogging platform be considered wrong?
It is essential for all blogs to be mobile-friendly to avoid losing traffic, as it benefits both readers and bloggers. For instance, if an idea strikes while traveling, a blogger can quickly create a post on their mobile device. Thus, it is crucial to choose a platform that allows for easy blog growth. In this article, we will discuss four platforms:
Now, we will examine the features and limitations of these popular blogging platforms.
A Guide to Choosing the Right Blogging Platform for You:
1. WordPress.org (Self-hosted WordPress platform)
Many website owners worldwide prefer to use WordPress.org because it offers them complete control over their websites. This open-source software is regularly updated with the latest features, and its mobile app allows you to blog from your phone, including uploading images, writing posts, and responding to comments. The platform is user-friendly, and anyone can start a blog in a matter of minutes. With the Bluehost starter package, you can pick a domain name and have your blog automatically installed. You can also customize your blog’s structure and design. Unlike other platforms, creating your blog on your hosting server means you own it, and you won’t have to worry about losing it to false complaints or competitors. However, if you’re not looking to make your blog popular or earn money from it, you can start on a free platform and move to WordPress.org later. WordPress.org offers thousands of themes to choose from and lets you customize them with ease using drag and drop customizers. In summary, if you’re serious about blogging, WordPress.org is the platform you need.
2. WordPress.com
As mentioned previously, there are two versions of WordPress, with the other being WordPress.com. If you’re still unsure about using WordPress.org, I recommend creating a blog on WordPress.com as it allows you to use WordPress without any cost (although you will still need to purchase hosting and a domain for WordPress.org). This will enable you to get accustomed to the WordPress platform, including tasks such as writing blog posts, moderating comments, and managing the dashboard. Additionally, WordPress.com is handy when you’re unsure about your domain name as it offers a free domain name like yourname.WordPress.com, which can later be upgraded to a custom domain name for a small fee. While there are paid features available on WordPress.com that enhance its capabilities, as mentioned earlier, if you desire “premium” features, it is better and more economical to opt for WordPress.org.
3. BlogSpot by Google (Free and a decent alternative to WordPress)
If you are interested in trying out blogging, BlogSpot is a great option that you can use for free. This platform is provided by Google, and thus it has a different structure than WordPress. However, it is generally easy and user-friendly for bloggers. BlogSpot offers a mobile app that allows you to publish and manage your blog from your mobile phone, although the app does not receive updates as frequently as it should. You can download the app from the Google Play Store if you have an Android phone.
One of the benefits of BlogSpot is that you have the freedom to monetize your blog however you want, such as through AdSense, Amazon Associates, sponsored posts, and direct ads.
While BlogSpot used to be my recommendation for bloggers, it has become less reliable in recent years. If you are searching for a free platform to start your blog, WordPress.com or Medium.com might be better options to consider.
4. Medium
If your aim is to focus solely on writing and reading and you are not concerned about customization or earning money, Medium is a great platform to use. It was launched in 2012, and its simple layout makes writing and reading a pleasure. As a free blogging platform, Medium is reliable and offers a mobile app that is user-friendly. While it does not offer monetization options, it is a great platform for entrepreneurs or business owners who are not interested in making money from their blog but simply want a place to write and share their thoughts.
Final thoughts: Which platform to select for blogging
Here are the suggestions I have based on my analysis:
WordPress.org: This is the indisputable champion. It’s widely used, updated frequently with new features, comes with a mobile app, and has no restrictions. WordPress.com: If you want to try out WordPress but aren’t ready to go all-in, go with WordPress.com. Medium: If you’re seeking a cost-free platform that focuses on writing, Medium.com is your best bet. BlogSpot: If none of the above options work for you, go with BlogSpot.
